The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released their 2014 Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Statistics, and the results are in for the fastest-growing surgeries of the year. It may come as a surprise that 2014 saw a significant rise in surgeries associated with weight-loss surgery, especially abdominoplasty (or “tummy tuck” – up 9%), thigh lift, and other surgeries to remove excess tissues that remain after massive weight-loss. These results are being called a “ripple effect” of the rise in weight-loss surgeries like gastric bypass in previous years. In 2013, the American Medical Association classified obesity as a disease that carries many health risks, and bariatric surgery has been on the rise ever since. Massive weight-loss does, of course, leave lots of hanging skin behind that carries its own issues such as chafing and infection. It is not surprising, then, that many patients who have endured a massive weight-loss would wish to have this excess skin removed.
